Planning for a New Year

Sunday, January 1

Although I've never been too big on goal setting and Bible plans, I've decided to try something new this year. I just found out about Professor Grant Horner's Bible Reading System and decided to try that out for the next few months at least, and to use it throughout the year. It's a great system set up on reading 10 chapters of the Bible a day, in all different parts of the Bible. So you'd read Matthew 1, Acts 1, Psalm 1, etc. Then the next day Matthew 2, Acts 2, Psalm 2, etc.

The part that throws me off is that this system seems to be set up not for in depth study but for moderate speed-reading. The point, it seems to me, is to read through these sections over and over again, picking up parallels between the different books. Once you finish a section, you start over. So you're going to become very familiar with Acts, and the gospels, and the Psalms. That's exactly what I want this next year. I think I've struggled with consistent Bible reading because I feel that a proper Bible study is paying attention to every single word and understanding every concept that is presented before moving on to the next verse. This seems to be my stumbling block!

So I'm going to try this new system in order to understand the context of the bigger picture of these books. My prayer is to become much more intimate with the scriptures and to be much more familiar with the word of God.
